Eron Baxu was a pilot back before The Scream. There were planes and ships worth flying back then, and by all accounts, he was good at it. The Scream and the wild MES fields that descended on the planet after did their best to ensure anyone with wings had them clipped, but with a stable flight corridor now between Dremlas and a so far unnamed settlement to the west- settled by IA pioneers, enough airspace now exists to re-qualify. The route could use scouting as is, and the expeditions sent that way have reported being menaced by a giant bird like creature, occasionally descending on the road-bound convoys to pick people off when possible. Trainer 2 is an atmoflyer, it was once a hyper modern jet fighter, at least by frontier standards. Time and technical attention have restored some of its glory, and this might be the only working aircraft in the entire Inheritor Alliance right now.

As you stroll out of your ready room to the tarmac, the flight line chief is already waiting for you with his clipboard and your flight helmet

(I'll post the plane stats, just gotta pull it from the builder)

"Combat air support for an infantry column moving to help that settlement out west. You heard the rumors about that weird giant bird? Probably won't see anything, but we strapped a pair of heavy machine guns to the plane just in case"
Avatar
"So I'm in for a leisurely flight or a bit of dragon slaying? Sure thing. Anything more to these big bird rumors before I get up in the air with it?"
Avatar
"Got an image, a moment please. I'll see if I can get it over to your pad" (I just gotta pull it out of the group thread i used it in last)

"Big bastard. Seems to bleed all the same when hit with weapons fire. And you should be faster than it in this thing"
Avatar
(long low whistle) "That's quite a fierce looking beast. Am I shooting this bird on sight then?"
Avatar
“Yes. That’s the official order from up too. This thing has taken too many lives as it is. Keep those ground pounders safe while they finish their trip. “
Avatar
"You got it." Eron takes his helmet from the chief and jogs over to the ship. He runs his preflight check list and preps for take off. Seeing as this is the only aircraft around he isn't sure if there is anyone on the air traffic control channel so he goes through the usual request for take off drenched in sarcasm. "This is Trainer 2, heading out to the new colony to offer air support. Sure is busy out here today, you folks let me know when I can get a turn. If you bump me to the top of the list I might bring back some barbequed bird for ya."
Avatar
There’s some laughter on the control tower. There are more controllers on than necessary , especially with just one working plane but everyone’s eager to grab certification hours for the month. You’re given permission to take off and vectors are provided for a westerly course
Avatar
Eron takes off. As he approaches the ground troops he pulls up their comms channel. "Hey folks, this is your air support making my first pass over you're location. Any sign of our bird today?"
Avatar
(Notice/wis. If you click the pencil on the top right of your character sheet it will be taken off edit mode. If you click notice it will ask what attribute you want to roll the check with. Click wisdom. There might be another box that pops up asking for any other modifiers. That’s usually going to be 0 unless something in the scene or another player gives you a bonus. Right now it’s just 0. The result will appear in the chat box and the sheet applies any modifiers based on your skill level and attributes. Just post the check results here when you get a sec to roll it)
Avatar
You don't see anything below or at your altitude as you stay within the corridor of stable air. The endless thick fog that seems to mute the landscape everywhere else boils and lights occasionally with arcane lightning within. There is a crackle on the radio, as someone on the ground picks up. "Trainer 2! Trainer 2! good to hear your voice. No sign of the bird yet, but we're just breaking camp for the morning hike. He'll be here if he's hungry again . we're sure. You've got a long loiter time though. Nothing to do but watch and wait"
Avatar
"Copy that, let me know if you see anything. I'll be circling round."
Avatar
The plane is buffered by a column of air as a descending shadow streaks by at hyper fast speed, diving toward the ground. You miss seeing much of it, it’s descending too fast to get many of the details but you can track that it’s diving at the ground
Avatar
Eron does his best to fall in behind the bird and calls down to the troops. "Find cover fast, our flaming feathered friend has arrived!"
Avatar
(And lets pop into initiative. Its a D8, and there is a quick link for it near the top right of your character sheet as well)

(3 for bird)
Avatar
(I'll need a quick primer on how this combat works. Is this more like normal combat because Im solo or is this ship combat? Do I start with CP? I see the machine guns do 3d6 dmg, so I think there are 20 rounds total, but I can only fire one per round, right? Anything else I'm missing?)
Avatar
(this is normal combat. Your plane has a targeting board, so you can fire both weapons if you use your main action to make a weapon attack. The combat is actually pretty much the same as 5e, which I remember you saying you had at least a little background in. Happy to expand on anything that isnt clear though, i know text isnt always the best format for combat) (edited)
Avatar
(Is it assumed I am in range of the bird now and will stay in range unless it flees? The chief said I should be faster than the bird, do we really know that yet?)
Avatar
(correct)
21:05
(and yes, we're not going to worry about range in this encounter, youre considered within weapons range for the duration. I'm not trying to throw too much at you our first time through) (edited)
Avatar
Eron gets a lock on the bird and lets both guns loose on it. (7 to hit; rolled 5 without modifiers)
22:56
(Just one roll to hit per action or per weapon?)
Avatar
(per weapon)
22:59
(the targeting board on the plane lets you fire both of its guns per main action)
Avatar
(or is it +1 DEX, +1 Attak Bonus, +1 Shoot)
Avatar
(d20+dex mod+shoot skill+attack bonus(if any) )

(i added a line to your character sheet for it)
23:01
The twin streams of heavy machine gun fire dance around the swooping bird, as it picks off two guards on the ground, carrying them high into the air and cartwheeling as it devours them. (its actions were against its prey, so back to you)
Avatar
Damn...I hope those guys don't come out of my pay check.
23:05
(I think the first roll glitched, got a 1 and 16)
23:07
(23 if the 1 gets a re-roll)
23:08
(14 and 14 dmg)
Avatar
(23 is fine!)
23:46
As the bird twists through the air, the crosshairs of your gunsights line up on it, and the small green icon for FIRE begins blinking. Twin barrels fire streams of hard rounds toward the bird, blasting chunks of flesh from its back and severing feathers from its titanic wingspan. It has enough fight left in it to dive toward your vehicle The plane is buffeted by the scrape of talons on your swept portside wing, but the armor plating seems to hold with only superficial damage
23:46
(got a 13, so didnt beat armor)
Avatar
Geeze that was close. Eron brings the plane around to lock onto the bird. Firing before he can get a solid lock (10 & 5).
Avatar
Groundfire has the bird jerk out of your sights with grace that only an organic creature can match, and its attention is now divided between you and the ground. You see it cartwheeling, angling for another pass to scatter the assembling soldiers on the ground. (double move, cant attack you)
Avatar
Eron makes a big loop around to get a good run on the bird. He fires double rounds from each gun. (8, 18, 21, 23 to hit) (10, 11, 14, 13 dmg)
Avatar
The bird has finished some sort of diving swoop on the ground as it ascends into the path of your tracers. Stitched full of another full salvo of high explosive death, it veers hard to the left, crashing into the tree and bringing several of them down with its bulk. It will never fly again.
Avatar
(3xp, 5000 credits)
Avatar
(woot woot) Eron continues to support the ground troops until they make it to the colony safely. He calls in to the flight line chief to check in. "Well we had a couple casualties but the bird has been put down. I'm heading back to Dremlas unless there's anything else you want me to handle out here."
Avatar
“That’s in. Set her down and we will get you a hot meal. You’ve done your job. “

As you land, the ground crew is out and beginning to celebrate. Shooting down a foe, especially one as feared as that bird is cause for commendation and you can already see one of the crew spray painting a red bird silhouette into the side nose art of Trainer 2. A ladder is locked into the side of the canopy for you to get down
Avatar
Woah...I wasn't ready for this kind of reception. Guess I won't be buying my drinks tonight. Eron climbs down from the atmoflyer into the fray of indistinguishable congratulations, shoulder pats, and a couple solid slaps on the ass. As he breaks free of the crowd he turns around and raises his hands in the air in an attempt to quite his friends, It produces the opposite effect and the crowd let's out another cry of celebration. "Alright everyone I'm going to clean up and then head over to The Landing Strip to celebrate not dying today. I can regale the tale of the flaming bird if you like after a few drinks."
Avatar
A small hanger on group begins to head over there, their continued celebration can wait until after you've had a shower and a chance to refresh yourself- you can feel your hair matted to the top of your head in something like an oil slick.
Avatar
The Landing Strip is not really the sort of place you get cleaned up to attend, it's known to be a dive bar for greese monkeys with even greesier food. Just the kinda place where Eron feels at home. He slips in unnoticed and saddles up to the bar, the bar tender shows up with a bottle of his favorite rice liquor and a huge glass of water before he can ask. "I'm starting to feel like we're better friends than you'd like to admit."
Avatar
"I heard you had a big day out there" he replies, not really answering the question. He proceeds to begin pouring your drink
Avatar
"Yeah, shot down the bird that's been picking off settlers. Unfortunately, it killed a couple of the boots I was trying to protect before I could take care of it. Here's to our boys on the ground. Thanks for distracting the bird." He takes a shot.
Avatar
there is a somber moment of reflection around the bar, before a cheers is given, and drinks are drained "To your health" the bartender says, pouring out another one and shaking his head as you go for your credit chit
Avatar
"Thanks. Welp...you have any good gossip to share?"
Avatar
“Eh. Same old happening around here. Trying to keep the fraternity at bay, and all the other weird shit outside the stabilization fields. Going to be a lot of work building enough resonators along the route you overflew today to make sure it stays open”
Avatar
"but theres a matter here in town you might be interested in if you can keep your nose to the ground, and don't mind doing some work without that plane"
Avatar
"I'm pretty versatile, besides there probably won't be much excitement in the cockpit for a while now. I am intrigued. What sort of...work does a bar tender drum up?"
Avatar
"All kinds. Some legal, some not. I guess I should ask first how much trouble you're okay getting into"
Avatar
"I should probably stay on the up-and-up considering I'm a pilot for the IA, however grounded we may be for now. I still have another year of "active" service left...but I could probably wander into legally gray areas, especially after today's victory."
Avatar
"I see. Well, there's a few Various exploration parties mapping out the sewers and undercity this place was re-built over. I think that's safe enough and within the law, if you're interested"
Avatar
"Alright. Yeah I could do with a bit of exploration. What does a gig like this pay?" (Does it make sense to get a Navcomp, Survival Kit, and Rope? Any other equipment you would usually recommend for going on this kind of thing? Also curious if my toolkit would be pretech or posttech considering we're only a few years after the Scream.)
Avatar
(Probably glow bugs or low light goggles, and it would be post tech since that’s what was usually on the frontier anyway) (edited)
Avatar
(Okay. I'll go ahead and get a dozen glowbugs if thats something we just handle ooc.)
Avatar
You're able to procure a dozen glowbugs for yourself after visiting a few of the more well-traveled stores in the Dremlas market, and your barkeep contact has provided a map showing a manhole cover not far from the main square has been identified as one of the easier ways down. Anything down there should be handled with caution, its rumored some of the city undesirables may also be living down there.
Avatar
The next morning Eron readies his gear and makes his way to the manhole. Once he's down at the bottom of the ladder he pulls out one of his glowbugs and lights it up.
Avatar
(can he adhere the glowbug to his belt buckle?)
17:02
(or anyplace he doesn't have to hold it and it won't blind him?)
Avatar
(you could stick it to your belt)
01:42
You don't think you're observed going down, and the junction ahead runs for about 100m before splitting off into a tunnel with a grate over it, and one without. From 100m away you can't tell if the grate has been tampered with or if there is some means of getting through it that isnt obvious from this distance
Avatar
Eron takes a few cautious steps down the tunnel, shining his glowbug on the ground, the wall, the ceiling; he stops, looks at his shoulders and holds the glowbug up at his forehead. Before he is able to stick the glowbug to his head he looks down at his belt buckle, noticing its just big enough to stick the glowbug to. Hm...maybe that will work. He holds the glowbug at crotch level and twists back and forth, then adheres the bug to his belt buckle. Alright lets see where it goes. Eron walks down the tunnel to the split and inspects the gate to see if there is anyway to open it.
Avatar
The gate has some spotty welds along it, like it was set back up in haste, or with inexpert tools
Avatar
Interesting...looks like someone's been through here. They obviously don't want anyone waltzing through here, but maybe no one is home. I wonder if I can break these welds with any of the tools I have.
Avatar
(Metatool?)
Avatar
(Or post tech tool kit)
Avatar
They aren't very good welds, but definitely more work than I'd want to hacksaw and enough of them I couldn't just ram the gate. Definitely a job for the metatool's plasma cutter. Eron adjusts the settings on his metatool and goes to work cutting through the welds.
Avatar
You are reminded of some of the training pieces you worked on back in better days of your pilot training and after a few minutes of work you have enough of the grate open where you can swing it out and slide through
Avatar
Eron continues cautiously down the tunnel, keeping an ear out for any possible activity further ahead.
Avatar
You can smell activity, rather than see it or hear it once you get 100m beyond the grate. Someone is cooking something, either their own shoes, or one of the vermin that live down here. you're too far from wherever this is happening to see the flames- or the flames are too low to be easily seen. The tunnel doesn't seem to branch off anywhere just yet-but informed you're not alone, you're able to make your way forward. Crossing another 100m of tunnel, you come to another junction where an east and west running set of pipes separate from this hub. Graffiti adorns the walls, showing some kind of enormous bird like the one you killed devouring a human heart
Avatar
Eron investigates the bird graffiti. Hey there friend...but do they fear you, or worship you? He follows the smell of grilled shoe.
Avatar
(Sneak/dex)
Avatar
You are silent as you move through the tunnels and see the glow of a trash fire ahead. Two distinct human shadows stand over the embers, and the source of the smell is stronger here
Avatar
Eron cuts his light off and tries getting close enough to eavesdrop on the couple.
Avatar
They’re discussing how not to burn the rodent they’re eating and have different ideas about how to best accomplish this.
Avatar
Eron keeps his distance in the darkness, just in case they react violently to his reveal. "Hey friends, mind if I share the warmth of your fire for a bit?"
Avatar
The fire barrel is almost knocked over as they're started, with your voice suddenly coming out of the darkness.
00:29
"Don't hurt us! Please!"
00:29
You can only see them as shadows crossing the firelight, and the absolute darkness here keeps you from seeing their faces. That might be a mercy
Avatar
"Don't worry, just a wanderer." Eron walks into the glow of the trash fire holding his hands out in front of him as if for warmth. "Pretty cold down here in these tunnels, eh? I'm just exploring, myself. You folks live down here?"
Avatar
“Yes. Live here. Eat here. Sick and die here.” The male of the group groans with a pained voice
22:17
He is hunched and keeps a few steps back from the fire
Avatar
Is it generic illness from poverty or something worse happening here? I hope it's not something I can catch. "Why don't you go to the surface? Are there more of you?"
Avatar
"The surface is dangerous for those without a home. Dremlas cares not for us'
05:25
"There are others. Around. Groups are dangerous. Disease spreads"
Avatar
Great. What have I got myself into? I wonder if we don't have the capability to cure the disease or if we lack the concern to help these people. Not quite ready to turn back though...lets roll the dice. "Thanks, I'll be sure to keep my distance from others. I think I'll continue on and leave you to your dinner. Any other advice for a surface dweller exploring these tunnels?"
Avatar
"Don't let light go out. Not used to the dark. Things down here take advantage of not having the eyes to see"
Avatar
"Got it. Thanks again." Eron steps away from the trash fire and clicks on his glowbug and continues on.
Avatar
(You won't have surprise rounds inflicted on you by anything down here since you bothered to ask)
01:39
(at least for this trip down here)
01:39
You can hear rushing water ahead a few moments after you pass by the scavengers, and you can see what loosk like a boat tied up to a crudely staked metal peg, pounded into the cement
Avatar
He climbs into the boat, mounts a glowbug on the bow, finds one of the paddles, and let's the boat loose. Maybe I should have told someone besides the bartender I was coming down here. Eh, dad's probably the only one who would miss me anyway.
Avatar
The boat begins moving down the makeshift stream and you see trails of bubbles following you, though they scatter when you shine light on them. You can hear more sound ahead. Music, laughter, shouting, all manner of city sounds , things that would be mere background noise above, and are miraculous down here
13:53
13:54
A small flue rocks the boat forward before you’re floating through something like a canal system in a brightly lit and high vaulted chamber
Avatar
Woah, a whole town down here. I wonder if they're the ones who welded off the tunnel or if it was surface dwellers. Eron finds a place to tie off his boat and walks around looking for any place people may be gathering or socializing.
Avatar
Something shifts in a pile of trash nearby, though the alley is in darkness. You get a brief flicker of a spiraling, tall shape
Avatar
what the? I guess the resonator doesn't work as well down here. I wish I understood that thing better, might be pretty MES-y down here.
Avatar
"Human...I smell a human. Don't panic. We're not going to eat you"
15:08
A hermit crab like humanoid begins working its way out of the trash, to come into the light.
15:08
Avatar
"Woah, easy there pal." Eron backs away from the crabman, keeping at least a few meters between them. "What, or...who..are you?"
Avatar
"I am a Mosk, like all of my people, though we do not look the same. I am not going to hurt you."
00:05
He makes a great show of holding up his claw like hands, and keeping his distance, allowing you to step back without making corresponding steps forward
Avatar
"I've never heard of your kind. How did you come to be on Saliv? My name is Eron, what is your name?"
Avatar
“Seafoam. There isn’t much sea , down here. Mosks have always been on Saliv, just not in places you’d expect to see us. Like down here , you might say”
Avatar
Damn, crabman without an ocean is worse than a pilot without a sky. "Nice to meet you Seafoam. I've always wanted to see an ocean myself, but sorry..."Uh.. is that insensitive? How many generations have these mosks longed for an ocean and you just want to see one sometime.
Avatar
"The oceans of this world are dangerous, and don't exist, being on floating landmass and all. It's a nice thought though. If I come out of the alley, are you going to get an itchy trigger finger?" he asks, eyeing the laser pistol on your belt
Avatar
"Don't worry, I'm more interested than scared. Come on out." Eron holds on to his backpack straps to make a show of keeping his hands away from his weapons, but maintains his distance as Seafoam comes out of the alley.
Avatar
There is some clicking and clattering as his feet begin scuttling over the pavers. “Lots of strange things happen in the places nobody looks. Especially on a strangle world like this. Guess we are one of them yeah? At least for you. “
06:29
“We don’t know much of the surface.
Avatar
"Lots of strange things on the surface too. I thought we knew how to live on this world and then most of the people with psi powers died a horrible death a few years ago, now this is the only stable area on the planet."
Avatar
“We lost many here as well during the same time. We had noticed the same in your species. Bodies ended up in the sewers. Hundreds of them”
05:33
“Not all of them in one piece”
Avatar
"Us new recruits to the airfoce were enlisted in cleanup efforts on the surface, I hope we've seen the last of that chaos." At least they gave us a few weeks of leave in exchange for all the body cleanup.
Avatar
Seafoam makes his species equivalent of a grunt. "Well, you found us, and so far no violence. Our people's seem to be after the same things, maybe its time we do something about this"
Avatar
"What do you have in mind?"
Avatar
"Two worlds. but the same planet, and we have the same problems. Doesn't this feel like it is too big to handle on our own?"
Avatar
Eron looks confused I think this crab is seriously overestimating my capabilities. "It definitely is too big for the two of us. I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I'm a kid they let fly planes and...no offense, but you just popped out of some junk in an undercity alleyway. We aren't exactly well connected individuals. I'm not even sure I know what you're proposing."
Avatar
"Help introduce us to your leaders, then, and I will do the same with ours. It is time the under-surface and the surface band together, to take back our planet"
Avatar
"I like the sound of that. You've got a deal Seafoam." Eron sticks out his hand for a handshake.
Avatar
He very gently, takes your hand between his claw. He puts just enough pressure to squeeze, not to pinch. "We can get you back to the surface, within the city. I suppose from there, we go our own ways and try to get our leaders to agree to a meeting."
Avatar
Didn't even think before sticking that hand out, did you? At least his claw wasn't as slimy as it looked. "Excellent. Lead the way. So...tell me a bit about your people. Do you know what planet you're from or how you came to be on this planet?"
Avatar
He begins heading into a side tunnel, through a coupole winding streets where the homes have been made from recovered scrap and refuse-reclaimed as construction materials now. "We are from here, Saliv, and always have been- though we've always remained underground and in the waterways. Humans were content to stay on the surface. I think the few times we did interact, the people we did speak with were probably thought to be crazy when they went back home with the story"
Avatar
"Well hopefully I won't be shrugged off or disregarded. Do your people have any specific assets or skills? Is there anything yall have to offer that would entice my leaders to seek your help, even if they do think I'm crazy?"
Avatar
"Mosks vary greatly, but we can survive in a lot of climates you can't. Those of us with shells are pretty tough. We dont require much, as you can see. I think mutual protection, mutual labor, all those things, makes us valuable"
23:34
"We're certainly more connected with the ecology of the planet than humans are, as this is our native home"
Avatar
(essentially you'd get this information https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/U_gkACd-HMMD)
Avatar
"That's fascinating. We definitely need your connection with the planet, we seem to be fighting it more than understanding it. "
Avatar
"And that is what you will tell your superiors when they ask what they have to gain with this deal. You have technology, we have the instinct. Together, we may be able to calm this planet down, and make it whole again. " You realize you have been walking for some time, and are back at the ladder leading up to the street where you entered hours ago

(Sweet I'll do the leveling up thing before we move on. Not sure if this info should go to his commanding officer or some sort of Dremlas government figure?) Damn it's bright out here. Now...wait...who is the right person to tell about the mosks? There you go diving in head first without thinking again. His stomach growls. Right must have been down there longer than I thought...gotta be a dog stand around here somewhere. He gets out onto the road and wanders a couple blocks before finding a corndog stand. He orders the breakfast dog: a breakfast sausage encased in pancake batter, served with a cup of syrup for dipping. Nothing like breakfast for late lunch. (edited)

(I think those talks are above his rank. I did flesh out a backstory and came up with some goals for him, not sure if you've seen. Operating on the assumption they know space travel is possible but he hasn't ever been off planet. Flying was always seen as his stepping stone to exploring the verse. I still feel a bit reluctant to make stuff up in this universe because I don't know it well enough, I find I get hung up on that when trying to figure out what to do or say.)
